THE FOOD COMMONS: A community growing project.

The Local Food Initiative (LFI) and the Indigenous Friendship Society of Revelstoke (IFSR) have partnered to develop a 1.8 acre plot of urban land into an educational food project at Powerhouse Road.

The purpose of Food Commons is to create a community space to grow food and share knowledge in ways that honours the land and the people who use it – in the past, present, and future. By engaging with Indigenous leaders and knowledge keepers, local growers, and the community at large, Food Commons aims to take steps towards reconciliation and enhancing food security in Revelstoke. Request for Proposal: Social Enterprise Study

The Food Commons Committee is now accepting submissions for a social enterprise study for the Food Commons Project.

Issued By: Revelstoke Food Commons Committee - A partnership between the Indigenous Friendship Society of Revelstoke and the Revelstoke Local Food Initiative

Project Name: Food Commons Social Enterprise

Proposal Deadline: August 30, 2025

Contact: Teal Randle, Food Commons Infrastructure Coordinator foodcommons@revelstokelocalfood.com

The Food Commons Committee is seeking proposals from qualified consultants or organizations to conduct a Social Enterprise Study for Revelstoke’s Food Commons project: a collaborative project between the Indigenous Friendship Society of Revelstoke and the Revelstoke Local Food Initiative to create an educational and community farm that honors Indigenous foodways and supports food security for present and future generations. The purpose of this study is to assess the viability, models, and pathways for developing a sustainable, values-aligned social enterprise that supports the long-term success of the Food Commons, with emphasis on reconciliation, food sovereignty, ecosystem health, education, and community well-being.

The Social Enterprise Study should:

  • Evaluate potential revenue-generating activities aligned with the Food Commons' values and mission (e.g., food production, educational programming, value-added products, events)

  • Assess market demand and community support

  • Identify risks, barriers, and success factors

  • Provide a business model canvas or feasibility assessment for 2–3 top ideas

Community Engagement

In 2024 the LFI and IFSR engaged community members from Revelstoke Secondary School, local farmers, and Indigenous Elders and leaders from the Sinixt, the Secwépemc, the Syilx and the Ktunaxa nations. The intention of our engagement is to gather feedback for developing the highest and best use of the land to serve our community.
