Community gardens have been a part of the Revelstoke food culture since 2008, offering community members of all ages the opportunity to learn about gardening, growing, harvesting and preserving. The Food Security Strategy 2022 identified local backyard gardening as an important source of local food production, with 32,971 square meters of garden space available.
In 2025 we are on a mission to grow over 2500 pounds of food in our community gardens to distribute into the the community & donate to the foodbank.
Revelstoke Visual Arts Center (RVAC) garden: Rented out by season to community members to grow in.
Downtown Community Garden (at the United Church): Used for youth education, community workshops - with a majority of the produce being donated to the local foodbank.
Track street (on private land): In 2025 this garden will exclusively be harvested for the foodbank.
Community Connections: In 2025 the LFI will be collaborating with Community Connections to run their small garden space & greenhouse, as well as offering educational opportunities. In 2025 we will primarily be growing herbs for use in the community kitchen that will go into community meals and the school food program.
Illecillewaet Garden: In 2025 we have added a 0.25 acre community coop garden space on private land. This garden provides the opportunity for a low barrier to entry, and relies on volunteers.
The Food Commons: In 2025 we are launching the community garden project in collaboration with the Indigenous Friendship Society Revelstoke.
RVAC GARDEN
The important community garden is located at 320 Wilson street, and is home to over 200 square feet of community garden space, a bee hive, a fruit forest, natural pollinator habitats and a pollinator garden. Alongside our garden coordinator and dedicated volunteers, the LFI is able to offer local community members the opportunity to grow in an established garden plot equipped with irrigation, as well as grow a sense of community with other local folks passionate about local food.
New to gardening, but not renting a plot here? Each growing season we offer community growing nights that are open to all.
This garden is also the home-base to our annual youth summer camp program - offering campers the opportunity to learn about growing, local food, fruit foraging, bee keeping and pollinator habitats.

Illecillewaet “ILLY” Garden
In 2025 the LFI has developed a 0.25 acre community garden on private land. This garden would not be possible without the generosity of the landowner, the Columbia Basin Trust through the “Community Development Fund” and a private funder. In the spring of 2025 we have developed garden beds, installed water & irrigation, a fence around the perimeter and installed a shed.
The garden will be run coop style - this is a low barrier to entry model with no rental fees and no long-term commitment. It allows participation in a way that fits into your schedule & lifestyle. The goals of the garden are to:
Provide community members with access to fresh, locally grown food.
Engage volunteers in hands-on learning about gardening and sustainable food practices.
Build a sense of community through shared responsibility and collaboration.
While still in its development phase, the coop style will offer a time exchange model where participants will get food for offering volunteer time to the upkeep of the garden. Being in our first year, we will be learning what that looks like in regards to time vs. quantities. Volunteer opportunities are:
Drop in: 2 hours per week.
Regular: Consistently coming 4-5 hours per week.
Core: A consistent presence in the garden at 8+ hours per week.

track street garden
This community garden is located on private land, and over the years has been used to grow for the food bank, as well as being rented to community members for private growing.
The Garden is located on Track St. overlooking the community of Revelstoke and the amazing mountains that surround it. What better place to garden!

Downtown Community Garden
The gardens at the United Church (Third & MacKenzie) are being used as an educational space for our Little Sprouts youth program and for community workshops.
How it started
In 2008, as a committee of the North Columbia Environmental Society, the LFI established an organic community garden at the Revelstoke United Church with the purpose of providing a growing space for the community, growing food for the Revelstoke Food Bank and demonstrating environmentally sustainable practices. Each year since, the garden has enjoyed different members and programming to enhance its offerings.
Ten years later, starting in 2018, the garden is now fully planted and cared for by the children of our community with the help of our Education Coordinator.

Growing our local community gardens
In 2025 we are looking to expand our garden network to open up more space for locals to grow their own food, and to support our local foodbank. Do you have land you would love to see used for good? Would you like to make a financial contribution to help us build and operate our gardens?
Our community gardens would not be possible without:
Volunteerism & community support.
The generous grant support from the City of Revelstoke via the Redi Grant program.
Donations and financial support from local businesses.
Community groups and private landowners who allow us to host gardens on their land.
Our LFI garden committee.
