The Local Food Initiative (LFI) and the Indigenous Friendship Society of Revelstoke (IFSR) have partnered to develop a 1.8 acre plot of urban land into an educational food project at Powerhouse Road.
The purpose of Food Commons is to create a community space to grow food and share knowledge in ways that honours the land and the people who use it – in the past, present, and future. By engaging with Indigenous leaders and knowledge keepers, local growers, and the community at large, Food Commons aims to take steps towards reconciliation and enhancing food security in Revelstoke. Volunteer Opportunity
We are looking for volunteers for Seedy Saturday on March 7th! Roles include hosting seed swap tables, hosting a seed activity table, and hosting an entry table. Shifts are 2.5 or 5 hours. Come connect with fellow plant lovers, share some seed wisdom, and be part of a fun, community-rooted event.
What is food Sovereignty?
People, Place, and Power in Our Food Systems
Food sovereignty is the right of peoples and communities to access healthy, culturally appropriate food, and to define and control their own food and agricultural systems. A food sovereign community does not rely on food produced and dictated by global markets or corporate interests. It goes beyond food security (which focuses on access to enough food) by emphasizing local decision-making, ecological stewardship, cultural values, and democratic participation in how food is grown, harvested, shared, and eaten. Food sovereignty also highlights the deep connection between food, land, culture, and community well-being, especially for Indigenous peoples whose food systems and traditions have existed for thousands of years.

Community Engagement
In 2024 the LFI and IFSR engaged community members from Revelstoke Secondary School, local farmers, and Indigenous Elders and leaders from the Sinixt, the Secwépemc, the Syilx and the Ktunaxa nations. The intention of our engagement is to gather feedback for developing the highest and best use of the land to serve our community.

Working Together
Thank you so much to our collaborators and funding partners. This project would not be possible without the help of
The City of Revelstoke - For granting access to the land. Through community engagement on their Powerhouse Road Park Concept plan, the City of Revelstoke recognized the need for a community garden and has since worked together with the LFI and the IFSR to create the Food Commons.
